One of the great things about incorporating collaborative environments into the classroom is that students can collaborate effectively using a variety of methods. Online/Cloud Based Collaboration can be used inside and outside of the classroom through the use of a variety of electronic devices. Popular devices such as mobile phones, computers, iPods, iPads, tablets, SMART boards or any other device with internet browser/app capabilities could be used as a collaboration environment for students.
Most of the collaborative environments intended for use on a computer or mobile device require internet access. This is because they store the information in a cloud based storage system that is only accessible when connected to the internet. The up-side to working on projects while connected to the internet is that the information is sent/received/stored in a timely manner and the most current information is at your disposal within seconds.
Many of the Web 2.0 tools that were created for collaboration are available through the web and through the use of an app. Apps were designed for ease of use on mobile devices and tablets. Many apps and tools allow the user to save information to the device if internet service is not available and will update to the cloud the next time internet is available. Occasionally the tool/app will have problems with their server and the product might not function properly but it is very rare.
Another great thing about using collaborative environments that upload information to the cloud or store it online is that the information is accessible wherever you are! Students, parents, teachers, administrators, and employees can access work or other information in school or in the comfort of their own home.
